Learning Technology

Computer technology is prevalent in the lives of our students – online data stores, mobile communications and social networking are woven into their day-to-day activities. These technologies are prevalent because they make two, once difficult things, very simple: instant communication with large (or small) numbers of people, and accessing, or adding to, the wealth of information accrued by humanity.

Learning has thus reached a time where it can be eased and enhanced by careful application of communication and information technology. Collaboration, formative assessment, the storage and creation of work, the research of knowledge and visually enhanced presentation of concepts are rendered simple, fast and more effective.

The goal at St Pius X is to undertake that careful application, ensuring that teaching and learning are enhanced by the process. We are guided in this by our ICT Plan and by our LT Steering Team.

Learning Applications and Software

St Pius currently makes available to all students some extremely useful software.

"Stile" is an e-learning application that enables lesson materials to be presented in a versatile, student-centred fashion. It lends itself brilliantly to 21st Century teaching and learning. It allows for the seemless integration of YouTube clips, ClickView materials, photographs, diagrams, voiceovers and much more into lessons on a regular basis.  It enables teachers to quickly give comprehensive feedback to students.  Stile is being used extensively by many of our Faculties. The cost of Stile is charged for each student on the Term 1 fee account.

"Mathletics" is a very enjoyable Mathematics learning application with over a 1000 learning activities that can be done either in class or at home. It helps students enjoy learning Mathematics. The cost of Mathletics is charged for each student on the Term 1 fee account.

“Word Flyers” is an online resource created by Blake eLearning, an Australian company responsible for ABC Reading Eggs. It works in similar ways to the Maths equivalent – Mathletics. It supports the Australian and NSW English Curriculum and gives students a platform to practise essential literacy skills – vocabulary development, spelling improvement, punctuation, reading comprehension, grammar and writing.

The program’s benefits are:

  • It differentiates the learning; tailoring the experience to the individual ability and needs of the student
  • It engages students with elements of gamification built in to the learning
  • It focuses on skill building while empowering the learner and building confidence
  • It reinforces teacher lessons
  • Statistics show 2 out of 3 teachers agree that the program has positively contributed to NAPLAN results

The cost of Word Flyers is charged for each student on the Term 1 fee account.

1:1 Tablet Program

At St Pius X Adamstown, we recognize that access to and skill with technology, both at home and at school, is now essential for learning and life. We believe that today’s students think, connect and communicate differently to students who were at school even a few years ago. We are aware that our students live in a world where information can be accessed and shared quickly over the Internet, where they can communicate with peers and create new knowledge.

As a school we are keen to inspire and engage this new generation of learner with today’s tools and assist them in reaching their full potential in all areas of the curriculum. We want our students to strive for excellence through a personalized learning program that integrates the curriculum and fully exploits the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Digital technology is an excellent tool to assist students with their learning. At St Pius our focus is on what has come to be known as 21st Century learning. Digital technology is extremely useful for supporting students as they develop skills in creativity, innovation, team work, collaboration, problem-solving, communication and information & ICT literacy.

All students at St Pius are expected to have an appropriate Tablet or Laptop for use in class every day. Information on appropriate devices can be found on our BYOD Information page on this website.
